In order to promote the balloon industry and ballooning to the general public, a docu-reality was filmed during the 2021 edition of the Championship. It was first broadcast on Évasion channel in July 2022 and is now available on the web. A second season of production was shot during the 2022 Championship. Broadcast dates will be confirmed at a later date.
For the past few years, we have proudly produced the Canadian Hot Air Balloon Championship in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. The competition is held under the sanction of the Canadian Hot Air Balloon Association and brings together many experienced pilots from across Canada.
WHAT IS COMPETITION FLYING?
Competitive ballooning is not a race of speed, but rather a contest to test the accuracy of the pilots. The winner is the one who best exercises his or her balloon maneuvering skills according to defined events that include objectives, targets, scoring zones, time and distance limits.
Unlike many aircraft, hot air balloons do not steer. Pilots must accurately judge wind direction and velocity, which generally vary with altitude and time, in order to maneuver the balloon in the desired direction. To successfully deal with these elements, as well as the challenges of competition, the pilot must employ a number of skills and abilities to manage his emotions.
